Synchro

notes from proposal:
> synchronised beach ball scene inc giant 10' balls and light up balls
> swimmers with lights attached to costumes
> swimmers with live cameras under pool, project live footage on building

> scene using dinghies, rubber rings, inflatables

notes from meeting:
 - pattern of synchro swimmers echoes shapes of the pool and building - snake video game
 - 'dryland' synchro - routines practiced out of water
 - multiples of performers seem appropriate for a building of Lido dimensions
 - film swimmers from above and project onto building

reference:
 - Esther Williams 1940s synchro choreographer
 - Splash mob! Combination of professional synchro and amateurs, unexpected appearance in a public pool

from Jess:
SynchroFitness specialize in teaching non synchro swimmers synchronised swimming in a fun and social atmosphere. It would be great to get together a group of locals from Saltdean and surrounding areas to teach them the basics of synchronised swimming alongside seasoned synchronised swimmers in a splash mob type of affair. I think it would be effective if throughout the performance more performers emerge and join in to make a large crescendo. This could be performed in and around the pool, on Saltdean beach and the walkway up to the Lido.

Some of the themes of the choreography could include:
  • Beach scenes
  • Towel sequence
  • Iconic moments of the Saltdean Lidos’ history/story in scenarios
  • Big patterns that slowly move and merge into new patterns
  • Simulating the Volk’s Railway (maybe the railway coming to the Lido)
  • Synchronised swimming in the sea
  • Iconic piece of music fitting with Saltdean
  • Recapturing the closings and openings of Saltdean Lido over the years
  • I have a friend who has opened the Lido on 2 previous occasions- she is 70 and still practicing synchro. It would be great to capture her memories.
Plan of action

  • Advertisement to the local area to recruit Saltdean residents to participate
  • It would be great if they could start attending my current classes to learn the basics, however i can easily teach within 4 weeks the basics alongside the choreography
  • I have 20+ seasonsed synchronised swimmers eager to swim (Adults)
  • I have 46 synchronised swimmers ranging from 8 - 17 years of age eager to swim
  • We would need at least 8 rehearsals with newbie swimmers of at least an hour long
  • Swimming pool hire for rehearsals (average price for pool hire per hour is £60)
  • At least 2 rehearsals in the Lido/beach/walk way
